WHO WE ARE
Name/location of the villages to be coverred: Amlasole, Amjharna, Kankrajhor, Mayurjharna, Jujardhara, Makarbhula villages, under the Banspahari Gram Panchayat, Block-Binpur II, District -West Midnapore, West Bengal, india.
This cluster of villages is located in the remotest corner of West Bengal, on the border of West Midnapore and Purulia districts and the State of Jharkhand. The place is 250 km away from Kolkata; the nearest Panchayat office is 18 km away at Banspahari; and it is as far as 26 km from the nearest police station at Belpahari. Given that only one bus commutes once a day from the place, these distances are prohibitively long. These villages are outside the range of mobile towers. It is in the valley area of Karsoti River, a tributary of Subarnarekha River in Jharkhand. The surrounding hills and the valley have two main streams namely Amjharna and Mayurjharna. The highest peak in this area is Lakaisini Pahar, 494 m above MSL in the North-western side in jharkhand. The main water stream originates from the northern side of the Lakaisini Pahar. Another stream originating in the north Bagduba village side meets the main stream in the middle of the valley.
Although the rainfall is around 1100 mm annually, over 80% of the rainfall goes out of the area as run off. Very little water conservation measures exist. In summer the village reels under shortage of potable water. Irrigation for agricultural land is very primitive.
4. Need assessment taking account of availability or lack of resources (human and physical) in the area covered by the project and a brief outline of the project.
The brief outline of the project is already drawn above under item 2 (objective).
For assessment of the need for a project of this kind in this cluster of villages, it is necessary to
(a) understand the nature of the inhabit, and
(b) draw from the experience gathered by us over last ten years in this area.
(a) These villagers are primarily from Munda, Bhumij, and Sabar communities- all of whom are scheduled tribes, the 'Adivasis, i.e. the indigenous people of India. They conform to the globally accepted definition of ethnic group 'that were indigenous to the territory prior to its incorporation into a national state, and who are politically and culturally separate from the majority ethnic identity of the state that they are a part of'.
